AIR EXPO 2000 BEST YET

Were you there?  You missed a good one on June 24 if you couldn't make it.  New this year was the first aerobatic competition.  Bill Cornick, Steve Stavrakakis, Tom Wade, and Mike Conrardy faced off to see which performer could please the crowd the most.  It was a close one between Bill and Tom, but Bill Cornick came out as the winner.  The F-18 demonstration was a hit along with the appearance of the B2 Bomber.  Be sure to check out our photo page (coming soon) to see what else you missed!  Many thanks go to Allen Chapman, owner of The Motorplex, for the title sponsorship (Allen is show at the right with announcer Larry Shapiro).  We look forward to working with Allen next year as we get ready for the 2001 event, June 23, 2001.

T-HANGAR RATE INCREASE EFFECTIVE JULY 1

Effective July 1, 2000, the T-hangar rates were increased by 3 percent.  The tie-down and cluster hangar rates remain unchanged.  As a reminder, tenants that pay their rent annually can save one months rent.....you pay for 11 months versus 12.  Month 12 is essentially free.

AVIATION MANAGEMENT CONSULTING GROUP
SELECTED FOR FBO STUDY

A feasibility study has just gotten underway to consider the improvement or expansion of airport FBO facilities.  The study is being funded from a $35,000 technical assistance grant from the Community Development Block Grant Program.  The purpose of the study is to assist the County and the Airport in addressing the following:  1) What level of airport business would be generated by the operation of The Motorplex and amphitheatre?  Is the assumption realistic? and 2) Would the proposed improvements at the airport terminal attract additional businesses that would generate sufficient revenues to allow the developer to service any debt incurred:  What is the extent of the risk to the county by participating in the financing of the proposed project?  General information on the proposal can be found here . . .

AMPHITHEATRE GENERATES ACTIVITY

The Yuba County Airport is pleased to report that the Sacramento Valley Amphitheatre is resulting in some famous arrivals and departures.  The word is getting out that Yuba County Airport is the closest arrival point for the amphitheatre.  Many people come and go and we don't always know who has been here.  Recent celebrities include the group KISS and Britney Spears....quietly in and quietly out......security is always an issue......thanks to Teri from Ryan Aviation for assisting the groups in getting to the amphitheatre.

OPUD IMPROVEMENT PROJECT READIES TO BEGIN

The Olivehurst Public Utility District, through the assistance of the Airport Manager, received a $1.8 million grant from the Economic Development Administration and a $600,000 loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to construct a new water treatment plant in Airport Industrial Park No. 1 and new distribution water lines along Arboga Road to McGowan Parkway.  The water treatment plant will serve to improve water for the airport, the industrial parks, and the Olivehurst community in general.  The new water distribution lines will open up an additional 150 acres of industrial property for development along Arboga Road.

ASOS COMMISSIONED

The ASOS was finally commission on October 4, 2000.  The frequency is 118.475 and the telephone number is 530/742-0695.  The commissioning is welcome after waiting a couple of years in test mode, however, it brings with it the end of the "human element."  Please take a look at the letter written in response to this decision by the FAA.  It may not make a difference, but at least Yuba County has voiced its opinion.  (click here to read letter)

SAFETY SEMINAR IN DECEMBER

The next safety seminar under the Wings Program is scheduled for 7 pm, Monday, December 11, 2000, at Jeanne's. The topic this time is "Stall & Spins and How to Avoid Them."  The Sutter Buttes Chapter of the Ninety-Nines is the host.

CORPORATE HANGARS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The corporate hangar area is busy these days as we get under construction with two corporate hangars and another planned to begin in the near future.  Albert Fruetel, long time airport tenant, has moved up to purchase a lot in the corporate hangar area and is well underway with the foundation of the facility.  Joe Souza and partner Robert Lewis, Souza Gyroplanes, is trailing right behind "Buck" as he gets underway with his new facilities.  Joe and Robert will be moving the business from the front line of the field to this new location.  Negotiations have also been completed with Chris Cartwright as he joins the group to build his own corporate facilities.

ENTERPRISE ZONE RECEIVES STATE AWARD

Another great year for Yuba Sutter as it receives its fourth award in three years under the State Trade and Commerce Agency Zone Excellence Awards.  The award was received for the newly established "Yuba-Sutter Microenterprise Training and Loan Program.  This program combines business training with the ability to access loan funds for the new entrepreneur.  The program is funded by the County of Yuba.  More information is available by accessing the County's Economic Development website at www.yubacounty.org.

COLLISION AVOIDANCE PUBLICATION OUT

The 9th Reconnaissance Wing of Beale Air Force Base recently published a publication entitled, "Mid-Air Collision Avoidance (MACA)" covering information concerning Beale Air Force Base and the Sacramento Valley.  Watch for excerpts from this publication coming to the website shortly.

An important issue . . . (from the publication) in a day when GPS and advanced radar systems control aircraft and help with navigation, you might think mid-air collisions (MAC) were a thing of the past. Not true. As aviators, awe continue to have accidents and suffer losses caused by running into each other.  The pamphlet is designed to help reduce the threat of a MAC in the Sacramento Valley, especially between military and civilian aircraft. Review the facts.  "See and Avoid" isn't just a good idea, it's an idea that may save your life!

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WEBSITE ONLINE

The Yuba County Economic Development Division is now online at www.yubacounty.org.  This is an excellent resource to find out what else is happening in Yuba County.  Please bookmark it and check back often as the county is embarking on a major marketing program to market the Yuba County Airport and south to the new Motorplex area.  Also, the County of Yuba now has a homepage at www.co.yuba.ca.us.  This site is the government website of the County.  Links to this site are also provided in the ED website.  In addition, the County has placed its first national advertisements since 1986 promoting the County to new capital investment.

A new category has been added to the Pilots Circle sponsorship.  In an effort to recognize those pilots that continue to support Air Expo each year through this benefits package, the gold sponsorship has been created.  This package adds (2) pancake breakfast tickets (value $4 each) and an autographed event poster.  In order to qualify for this package, pilots must be a member of the circle for three years continuous.  This year, our charter circle pilots will be receiving this package if they return as a member of the circle.  To see if you qualify, click here

SACRAMENTO VALLEY AMPHITHEATER READIES TO OPEN

The Sacramento Valley Amphitheater, located approximately 3 miles south of the airport along Forty Mile Road, is scheduled to have its Grand Opening in early June with its first "test" concert scheduled for June 10.  This concert, featuring the Stone Temple Pilots, will be used to work out all the bugs and problems before the first main concert scheduled for June 12.

It is anticipated that traffic at Yuba County Airport will begin to increase at a slow, but steady rate as the first entertainment venue for Yuba County begins operation.  It is unknown how much impact the amphitheater concert series will have, but Ryan Aviation is already receiving pilot inquiries about arriving with concert guests in June.

Area community organizations, groups, Chamber of Commerce members, and area service clubs are invited to tour the facility on Friday, May 12, 2000, at 3 pm.  Air Expo committee members are welcome to attend.  For more information, contact the Airport office or join us at the next Air Expo meeting on June 11, 12 noon, Jeanne's.

AIR EXPO TEAMS- UP WITH THE MOTORPLEX

The Yuba-Sutter Air Expo Committee announced that the the Motorplex at Yuba County  has agreed to be the title sponsor for Air Expo 2000. The partnership with the Motorplex means that, in addition to the Air Show portion of the event, [I WIN] a freestyle aerobatic competition has been made possible. "Teaming-up of the Motorplex and the Air Show is a natural because both are focused on bringing people to Yuba County," noted Brent Hastey, Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors, "The sponsorship also demonstrates that the Motorplex is committed to being a part of the community."
